A deadly confrontation in Baldwin Park has left a community in mourning after a police officer and a bystander were fatally shot during a violent outburst on Saturday evening.
Authorities say the incident began when 22-year-old Eduardo Roberto Medina-Berumen allegedly shot and killed Darius Wong, a 43-year-old father of two, as Wong parked his car near a family gathering on Filhurst Avenue. Responding to reports of gunfire, Baldwin Park police officers arrived at the scene and were immediately met with a hail of bullets. Officer Samuel Riveros, described as a dedicated public servant, was struck in the head and later died at the hospital. Another officer, Anthony Pimentel, suffered injuries from glass shards after a bullet shattered his patrol car window.
Medina-Berumen has been charged with two counts of murder with special circumstances, two counts of attempted murder, and illegal possession of an assault weapon. Prosecutors say he used an AR-15 style rifle and fired dozens of rounds during the rampage. If convicted, Medina-Berumen could face life in prison without parole or the death penalty.
The Baldwin Park Police Department and the local community have honored Officer Riveros with vigils and processions, reflecting on his bravery and sacrifice. The investigation, led by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, is ongoing as the city grapples with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence.
