Virginia and Missouri Prepare for High-Stakes Gator Bowl 2025 Showdown

The 2025 Gator Bowl promises to be a thrilling matchup as No. 20/19 Virginia takes on No. 25 Missouri on Saturday, Dec. 27. The game, set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET, will be televised on ABC, offering football fans a prime-time showdown between two competitive teams from different conferences. This will be the 81st edition of the storied Gator Bowl, which has a rich history of hosting exciting college football games at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville, Florida.

Virginia, known affectionately as the Cavaliers, are making their 22nd bowl appearance and their third trip to the Gator Bowl. They previously participated in 1991 and 2008. This season, the Cavaliers secured their bowl eligibility with a strong start, winning six of their first seven games. Their last bowl game was the 2019 Orange Bowl, and they are eager to build on that momentum. Virginia's last bowl appearance was in 2019, and they are entering the game with a record of 10-3, aiming for their 11th win of the season, which would be a program record.

Missouri, or the Tigers, are no strangers to bowl games either, although their last appearance in the Gator Bowl was much earlier, in 1968. They won that game with a decisive 30-0 victory against Alabama. This year, Missouri enters the game with a solid 8-3 record, highlighting their competitive season and readiness for a challenging bowl matchup. The Tigers are eager to prove their mettle against a formidable opponent and continue their winning tradition.

The Gator Bowl matchup was finalized following a last-minute change in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) bowl selections. Notre Dame's decision to opt out of all bowl games created an opportunity for Virginia to step in and accept the invitation. This development adds an extra layer of excitement and unpredictability to the upcoming game, as both teams will be highly motivated to secure a victory in this high-stakes bowl game.

The stage is set for an electrifying clash at TIAA Bank Field, with both Virginia and Missouri aiming to end their respective seasons on a high note. The game is anticipated to be a tight and strategic battle, with both teams showcasing their strengths and tactical prowess. Fans can expect an exciting display of college football as these two powerhouses from the ACC and SEC collide in the historic Gator Bowl.
