Simon Yates Shocks Giro d’Italia—But What’s Next for 2025 Standings?

Simon Yates has clinched a career-defining victory at the 2025 Giro d’Italia, overcoming fierce competition and dramatic mountain stages to secure the maglia rosa in Rome. The British rider, representing Visma-Lease a Bike, finished the three-week race nearly four minutes ahead of rising star Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and almost five minutes ahead of Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost).

Yates captured the overall lead with a bold solo attack on the Colle delle Finestre during stage, ending Del Toro’s 11-day run in pink. Despite not winning a single stage, Yates maintained his advantage through the ceremonial final stage, becoming the first Giro champion in a decade to do so without an individual stage victory.

The final general classification for the 2025 Giro d’Italia:.

  • 1st: Simon Yates (Visma-Lease a Bike) — 82:31:01.

  • 2nd: Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) — +3:56.

  • 3rd: Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) — +4:43.

Other notable winners include Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) for the points classification, Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana) for the mountains ranking, and Del Toro as the best young rider.

With the absence of last year’s champion Tadej Pogacar and the withdrawal of favorites Primoz Roglic and Juan Ayuso, the 2025 Giro saw new contenders emerge and a fiercely contested battle for the podium. Yates’ triumph marks his second Grand Tour victory, following his 2018 Vuelta a España win, and sets the stage for even greater expectations in the next cycling season.
