Erin Hills Delivers a Surprise Finish—Who Took the U.S. Women’s Open Crown?

The 2025 U.S. Women’s Open at Erin Hills ended with a dramatic twist as Sweden’s Maja Stark captured her first major title, finishing at under par. Stark held off world No. Nelly Korda and Japan’s Rio Takeda, who both finished two shots back after intense final rounds.

The championship, held from May 29 to June in Erin, Wisconsin, saw Stark card an even-par 72 on Sunday to secure the win. The leaderboard was tight throughout the final day, but Stark’s steady play on the challenging Erin Hills course proved decisive. Korda, despite a strong 71 in the final round, was unable to close the gap, while Takeda matched Stark’s 72 to share second place.

This year’s event featured eight former champions and three Olympic medalists, making the field one of the strongest in recent memory. The $12 million purse and a winner’s share of $2.4 million added to the high stakes at Erin Hills, a venue known for testing the nerves and skills of the world’s best golfers.

Linn Grant, another pre-tournament favorite, was unable to mount a final-round charge, leaving Stark to celebrate a breakthrough victory on one of golf’s grandest stages.
