Max Homa’s bid to qualify for the 2025 U.S. Open ended in heartbreak after a dramatic finish at the Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Columbus, Ohio. Carrying his own bag following a split with his caddie, Homa played 36 holes and finished at five under par, just enough to force a five-way playoff for the final spot at Oakmont Country Club.
Needing a birdie on his final hole to secure automatic entry, Homa three-putted for par, sending him into the tense playoff. Cameron Young ultimately clinched the last qualifying place with a birdie on the first extra hole, leaving Homa and fellow PGA Tour star Rickie Fowler out of the field Homa’s near-miss means he will likely miss his first major since 2019, ending a streak of 21 consecutive appearances.
Despite the disappointment, Homa showed class, spending time with fans after the round and reflecting on the challenge of “Golf’s Longest Day.” Unless he receives a special exemption or wins the RBC Canadian Open to move into the world’s top 60, Homa will not tee it up at Oakmont this June.
