Sabalenka Ends Swiatek’s French Open Reign—But There’s More to This Rivalry

Aryna Sabalenka stunned the tennis world by defeating Iga Swiatek in the French Open semifinals, halting Swiatek’s 26-match unbeaten streak at Roland Garros and denying her a fourth consecutive Paris crown. The top-ranked Sabalenka prevailed 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-0 in a fiercely contested match that saw both players at their physical and mental limits.

After a tense opening set filled with eight service breaks, Sabalenka seized the tiebreak before Swiatek responded to force a deciding set. The final set, however, was all Sabalenka—she capitalized on Swiatek’s unforced errors and allowed her opponent just six points, sealing her first-ever French Open final berth.

Sabalenka, already a three-time Grand Slam winner on hard courts, will now face either Coco Gauff or French upstart Loïs Boisson for the 2025 title. For Swiatek, the defeat marks only her third career loss at Roland Garros, signaling a dramatic shift in the women’s tennis landscape.
