Midea has announced a massive recall of approximately.7 million U and U+ window air conditioners due to a design flaw that can cause water to pool inside the units, creating a risk of mold growth and potential respiratory issues for users. The recall, issued on June, 2025, affects units sold in the U.S. and nearly 46,000 more in Canada, with models retailed between March 2020 and May 2025 at major outlets including Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot, and online platforms such as Amazon and Midea’s own website.
The affected air conditioners, recognized for their quiet operation and innovative U-shaped design, were sold under multiple brand names: Midea, Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, Mr. Cool, Perfect Aire, and Sea Breeze. They come in three cooling capacities—8,000,,000, and,000 BTU—and are white, measuring about 22 inches wide and inches high. Model numbers are printed on a label on the front right side of the unit.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has received at least 152 reports of mold in these air conditioners, including cases where users experienced respiratory infections, allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing, or sore throats linked to mold exposure. Midea is offering customers a full refund or free repair; affected owners can return their units using a prepaid shipping label or submit proof of disabling the unit for a refund.
Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled air conditioners immediately and contact Midea for next steps to protect their health and home.
