Midea has announced a major recall of approximately.7 million U and U+ window air conditioners due to a risk of mold exposure caused by a drainage defect. The affected units, sold between March 2020 and May 2025, were marketed under multiple brand names including Midea, Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, Mr. Cool, Perfect Aire, and Sea Breeze.
The recall was prompted after 152 reports of mold buildup inside the units, with at least consumers experiencing respiratory symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, sore throats, and allergic reactions linked to mold exposure The design flaw allows water to pool inside the air conditioner, creating an environment where mold can thrive and potentially cause health issues, especially for those with allergies, asthma, or compromised immune systems.
The recalled models are white, designed to fit in windows, and come in,000,,000, and,000 BTU sizes. Model numbers can be found on a label on the front right side of the unit. These air conditioners were sold at major retailers including Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot, Menards, and through online platforms like Amazon and Walmart, with prices ranging from $280 to $500.
Consumers who own an affected unit are urged to contact Midea for a full refund, free repair, or to submit a photo showing the power cord has been cut to receive compensation. The company is providing prepaid shipping labels for returns and encourages immediate action to reduce the risk of mold exposure.
