A Chicago police officer was fatally shot by her partner during a chaotic confrontation on the city’s South Side Thursday night, authorities confirmed. The officer, Krystal Rivera, 36, a four-year veteran of the department and mother to a 10-year-old daughter, died after being struck in the back by a bullet fired unintentionally by her fellow officer.
The incident began around:50 p.m. when Rivera and her tactical team from the 6th District attempted to stop a man believed to be armed in the 8200 block of South Drexel Avenue. The suspect fled on foot into a nearby apartment, prompting officers to pursue. Inside, they encountered another individual armed with a rifle. During the tense encounter, Rivera’s partner discharged his weapon, unintentionally hitting Rivera.
Rivera was rushed to the hospital in a squad car that crashed and caught fire en route, forcing a transfer to another vehicle. She was pronounced dead shortly after arrival The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed she died from a gunshot wound to the back.
Three firearms were recovered at the scene. The suspect with the rifle and others involved were taken into custody, though no charges have been announced yet Another officer sustained a wrist injury and was hospitalized in fair condition.
Superintendent Larry Snelling described Rivera as “young, vibrant, and a dedicated worker,” noting her commitment to making Chicago safer. Mayor Brandon Johnson called on the city to keep Rivera’s family and the police department in their thoughts, stating, “Her young, energetic, and bold approach toward keeping us safe is the memory that we will honor”.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting to determine the full sequence of events inside the apartment.
