The San Francisco Giants secured a dramatic 5-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night, capitalizing on a wild pitch by Braves reliever Pierce Johnson in the 10th inning. Tyler Fitzgerald, who started the inning as the automatic runner on second base, advanced to third on a groundout and then sprinted home with two outs after Johnson spiked a curveball that Braves catcher Sean Murphy couldn’t handle.
The win marked the Giants’ third straight and handed the Braves their fifth consecutive loss, underscoring Atlanta’s recent bullpen struggles. San Francisco jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, aided by defensive miscues and a run-scoring wild pitch from Atlanta starter Spencer Schwellenbach. The Braves clawed back, tying the game at 4-4 in the seventh on a two-run homer by Matt Olson.
Despite some sloppy baserunning—including Fitzgerald being picked off to end the ninth—the Giants found a way to win late. Reliever Spencer Bivens escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the 10th to earn the victory for San Francisco.
Both teams have now played 26 one-run games this season, tied for the most in the majors, but the Giants improved to 14-12 in those contests while the Braves fell to 9-17.
