Salmonella Outbreak: Over 1.7 Million Eggs Recalled—Is Your Carton on the List?

A major salmonella outbreak has triggered a recall of more than.7 million eggs across nine states, with nearly 80 people sickened and at least 21 hospitalized as of early June 2025. The recall, announced by the August Egg Company, affects brown cage-free and brown certified organic eggs distributed between February and May, 2025, with sell-by dates from March to June, 2025.

The recalled eggs were sold at major retailers including Walmart, Safeway, Raley’s, Ralphs, Lucky, FoodMaxx, Food Less, Smart & Final, and Save Mart in California, Nevada, Arizona, Washington, Wyoming, New Mexico, Nebraska, Indiana, and Illinois Consumers are urged to check their egg cartons for plant codes P-6562 or CA-5330 and Julian dates between 32 and 126, which are printed on the side of the carton.

Health officials warn that salmonella infection can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, with young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems at greater risk for severe illness Anyone with recalled eggs should dispose of them immediately or return them to the store for a refund, and thoroughly clean any surfaces or utensils that may have contacted the eggs.

August Egg Company has halted fresh egg sales and diverted all remaining eggs to pasteurization facilities to prevent further risk The CDC and FDA continue to investigate the outbreak and advise the public not to eat, sell, or serve the recalled eggs.
