The Baltimore Orioles’ latest game delivered a jolt of excitement, and it wasn’t from a usual suspect. Ramón Laureano, who didn’t even start the game, came off the bench and smashed two home runs, powering the Orioles to a 9-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday at Camden Yards.
Laureano entered in the third inning after Heston Kjerstad was hit by a pitch. He wasted no time, launching a two-run homer to left-center that gave Baltimore a 5-3 lead. He wasn’t done—Laureano added a solo shot in the seventh, and nearly made history with a deep flyout in the eighth that came just short of a third home run. Had it cleared the fence, Laureano would have joined an exclusive club: only one player since has ever hit three homers in a game after starting on the bench.
The Orioles’ offense was electric, with five home runs in total. Laureano’s performance was particularly notable, as he became just the sixth player in franchise history to hit multiple home runs in a game as a substitute. He also sealed the win with a leaping catch in left field to end the game.
Laureano, signed by Baltimore in February, has had limited opportunities this season, but proved he’s ready when called upon. Orioles manager Brandon Hyde praised his professionalism and readiness, emphasizing that Laureano’s big day was a testament to staying prepared.
The Orioles and Reds wrap up their series Sunday, but Laureano’s heroics will be hard to top.
