The fourth game of the American League Championship Series between the Cleveland Guardians and the Tampa Bay Rays was postponed on Friday, October 16, due to persistent rain at Progressive Field. Major League Baseball had hoped to find a three-hour window without precipitation to play the game, but the downpour never ceased.
Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash stated that the sky did not clear as hoped and that the decision to postpone was the most logical choice given the lack of guarantee that another precipitation zone would not arrive. Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt noted that the team had known for several days that the weather would be difficult and that MLB ultimately decided to wait.
The series will resume on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. ET. The fifth game is scheduled for Sunday at 5:00 p.m. ET at Progressive Field. If a sixth game is necessary, it will be played on Monday at 8:00 p.m. ET in St. Petersburg, Florida. This marks the first time an ALCS game has been postponed since 2019, when the New York Yankees hosted the Houston Astros.
Earlier in the series, the Guardians took a 3-1 lead after winning the third game 3-2. The team is now four wins from the World Series. St. Petersburg police are preparing for crowds of between 35,000 and 40,000 people at Tropicana Field for the upcoming games in Florida.
