In the opening scene, Riley sits at his work desk and begins pursuing a lead on a suspect named Ray Biller.
Riley contacts Assistant District Attorney Nolan Price, telling him “Need to talk to you right away. Call me back,” and also calls his partner, Detective Theo Walker, saying he is headed to a bar because “something is cooking.”
After receiving a text that Walker is on his way, Riley proceeds to the bar, spots Ray Biller exiting, and follows him.
When Riley confronts Biller outside the establishment, Biller turns and shoots Riley twice in the chest before fleeing.
Walker arrives moments later, finds Riley bleeding, and transports him to a hospital where medical staff inform Walker and Lieutenant Jessica Brady that Riley could not be saved.
Lieutenant Brady then assigns newly arrived homicide detective Robert Calvino to interview Walker and investigate the killing.
During the investigation, Riley’s wife discloses that her husband had recently withdrawn substantial sums of cash from their bank account.
The showrunners chose to make Riley’s exit permanent by killing the character rather than writing him out off‑screen.
