Bills Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson Ejected for Spitting at Raiders

Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was ejected during the second quarter of Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders after spitting toward tight end Brock Bowers. The incident occurred late in the second quarter, and the resulting penalty helped set up a Raiders field goal. The Bills won the game, with quarterback Josh Allen throwing for 255 yards and two touchdowns to tie the franchise record for passing touchdowns in a single game.

Automatic Ejection and Potential Suspension

Spitting is an automatic ejection in the NFL. Gardner-Johnson is likely facing a fine and a possible suspension from the league. This marks the second ejection of his NFL career; the previous incident occurred in 2024 when he accrued two personal foul penalties in the same game. In that instance, he also directed middle fingers at the Washington Commanders' crowd while leaving the field.

Gardner-Johnson is in his first season with the Bills, having signed a one-year contract with a base salary of $3.5 million. It is his sixth different team and his fourth in the past three years. The ejection left the Bills shorthanded in the secondary for the remainder of the contest.
