Big 12 Acknowledges Clock Error in BYU's 28-24 Victory Over Notre Dame
The No. BYU Cougars defeated the No. Notre Dame Fighting Irish 28‑24 on Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
The game ended when quarterback CJ Carr attempted a pass to receiver Jaden Greathouse in the south end‑zone, and the ball fell incomplete.
Replays showed one second remained on the stadium clock when the ball hit the ground, indicating Notre Dame should have been granted one additional play.
The Big 12 conference later issued a statement confirming that replay officials incorrectly cleared the play and that time remained on the clock.
The conference announced it will conduct an internal investigation into the officiating error.
ABC analyst Matt Austin said the contact on the play “warranted a flag” for defensive pass interference.
NBC analyst Terry McAulay wrote that the replay crew should have reviewed the clock and, if it showed 0:01, Notre Dame would have received another snap.
Notre Dame had previously gained a first down on a 5‑yard pass to Micah Gilbert with five seconds left and called a timeout before the final play.
Because Notre Dame is independent, a Big 12 officiating crew handled the game’s conclusion.
