New Mexico Lobos Defeat Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 21-10 on Homecoming

On Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors fell to the New Mexico Lobos, 21-10, at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex in Honolulu.

Scottre Humphrey propelled the Lobos with a 49-yard touchdown rush in the fourth quarter and finished with two touchdowns and 90 rushing yards, helping New Mexico improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Mountain West, the conference’s only undefeated team.

The comeback began early in the third quarter when a trick play saw receiver Bailen George take an end‑around and throw a 35‑yard pass to quarterback Toa Fa’avae, setting up Humphrey’s run to the 1‑yard line and his subsequent score that cut the deficit to 10-7.

New Mexico completed the comeback with two unanswered fourth‑quarter touchdowns, sealing a second‑half shutout after trailing 10-0 at halftime.

Hawaii’s homecoming crowd of 11,878 watched the Warriors drop to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the Mountain West, marking their fourth straight loss.

"It's really all just part of it," head coach Timmy Chang said after the game.
"It's frustrating. We had it. We have to play in all three phases of the game for this thing to work. I thought defensively we played our hearts out against a good team. But I guess it wasn't enough. We have to get better," associate head coach Chris Brown added.

Key defensive moments included a Toa Fa’avae interception at the Rainbow Warriors’ 10‑yard line, followed by UNM safety Drew Speech forcing a fumble from Hawaii quarterback Micah Alejado, with linebacker Mercury Swaim recovering the ball for a touchback.

Following the victory, New Mexico returns home with a three‑game win streak to host North Dakota State at 8 p.m. Saturday.
