New investigation raises questions about assistance in 1994 murders

More than three decades after Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were murdered, a new investigation raises questions about whether someone helped clean up the alleged crime scene.

The investigation references claims that O.J. Simpson may have received assistance from a former gangster associate, identified as Joseph “Joey” Ippolito, a connected drug dealer who was arrested in 1994 and turned government informant during Simpson’s 1995 trial.

A 1996 federal prosecution memo obtained by the New York Times described Ippolito as “a remarkable source of information” and noted that his knowledge would “likely to result in significant prosecutions.” The memo stated that Ippolito became close to several individuals at the center of the Simpson/Goldman murder case.

According to the memo, Ippolito was privy to many facts relevant to the case, including Simpson’s alleged domestic violence, the Simpsons’ narcotics usage, Simpson’s attempted flight from justice, and his disposal of the murder weapon.

Ippolito managed an Italian restaurant in Los Angeles frequented by celebrities, had become close with Simpson’s best friend Al Cowlings – described as the infamous wheelman when Simpson attempted to flee in a white Ford Bronco – and was also dealing drugs through his business connections, which later led to his incarceration.
