Veteran Boston Anchor Jim Boyd Dies at 84 After Four Decades at WCVB
Jim Boyd, a longtime anchor and reporter for Boston’s WCVB‑TV, died on Tuesday at the age of 84.
Boyd began his broadcasting career in the mailroom of National Educational Television in New York City after leaving college at age 19. He later moved into production, traveling internationally as an NET producer before relocating to Boston.
In Boston, Boyd became a top‑rated anchor of morning and midday newscasts on WCVB‑TV, Channel 5, a role he held for nearly four decades. During that time, he frequently visited schools and community organizations, including the YMCA in Roxbury and Youth Enrichment Services, to speak with children.
"He did not care about the limelight," longtime co‑anchor Susan Wornick said. "He cared about the issues."
Boyd was inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2012 and completed his long‑delayed bachelor’s degree the following year.
He had lived in Needham for many years, and his health had been failing prior to his death.
