Democrat Aaron Ford Elected Nevada's First Black Governor, Defeating Incumbent Joe Lombardo

Democrat Aaron Ford was elected governor of Nevada on Wednesday, Nov. 4, defeating Republican Joe Lombardo.

Ford, who serves as Nevada’s attorney general, became the first Black person elected governor of the state.

The race was part of the U.S. midterm elections, which also included contests for one‑third of the Senate seats, every seat in the House of Representatives and governorships in 36 states.

Democrats, who oppose President Donald Trump, won majorities in both chambers of Congress and secured more governorships than any other party.

Lombardo received direct support from Trump during the Nevada campaign; the president appeared with Lombardo at rallies in the state and endorsed the Republican candidate on several occasions.
