Elon Musk’s Nearly Half‑Billion Dollar Spend Fails as Republicans Lose Senate Seats and Congress

Elon Musk injected nearly half a billion dollars to support Republican candidates in the 2026 midterm elections, but the candidates were soundly beaten on Tuesday.

The most notable loss for Musk was the defeat of ultraconservative Ken Paxton in the Texas senatorial race. Musk had spent more than 220 million dollars in favor of the former Texas attorney general, yet a 37‑year‑old Democrat, James Talarico, won the Senate seat.

Musk, described as the first “megadonateur” of these elections, responded sarcastically to the string of Republican setbacks, noting that “the people of Texas” were not swayed by money. He also remarked that “the interference of my space lasers in the elections did not work this time,” after Republicans lost control of both chambers of Congress.

In a brief post on X, Musk expressed concern about a possible slowdown in data‑center deployments following the election results.
