Former West Virginia Governor and U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller Dies at 89

John D. “Jay” Rockefeller IV died on Friday at his Washington home at the age of 89, according to family statements reported by the Washington Post and the New York Times.

Born in New York in 1937, Rockefeller was the great‑grandson of oil magnate John D. Rockefeller and moved to West Virginia in 1964 as a volunteer for a poverty‑relief mission in the Appalachian coal region.

He served as governor of West Virginia from 1977 to 1985, then represented the state in the U.S. Senate from 1985 until his retirement in 2015, a three‑decade tenure.

During his Senate career, Rockefeller helped establish the Children’s Health Insurance Program in 1997, expanding health coverage for low‑income families, and he chaired the Senate Intelligence Committee.

His public service was marked by a focus on health care access and poverty alleviation, particularly for coal miners, veterans, and children.
