Oakland Mayor Election: Who Will Take the Lead? Early Results Leave City Waiting

Oakland’s high-stakes mayoral special election remains too close to call, with former City Councilmember Loren Taylor holding a razor-thin lead over ex-Congresswoman Barbara Lee as ballot counting continues. The special election, triggered by the recall of Mayor Sheng Thao last November, has drawn intense attention as voters seek new leadership amid widespread frustration over crime, homelessness, and public corruption.

After nine rounds of ranked-choice voting, Taylor has.17% of the vote, compared to Lee’s.83%, with all precincts reporting. However, thousands of mail-in ballots are still being processed, and officials have indicated that no additional updates will be released until Friday, leaving the city in suspense.

Taylor, who narrowly lost the mayoral race to Thao, campaigned as a pragmatic change agent, pledging to address Oakland’s budget crisis and public safety concerns. Lee, a progressive icon with years in Congress, entered the race as the presumed frontrunner but now faces an unexpectedly tight contest.

The outcome of this election could mark a significant shift for Oakland, reflecting a broader regional trend away from progressive leadership toward candidates promising fiscal stability and crime reduction. As the city waits for the final count, both campaigns are preparing for a tense week ahead.
