The Word That Changed Everything: Faizan Zaki’s Unforgettable Scripps Spelling Bee Triumph
Faizan Zaki, a 13-year-old from Dallas, Texas, clinched the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee title after flawlessly spelling the French word “éclaircissement” in the 21st round, outlasting more than 240 competitors from across the country. The seventh-grader from C.M. Rice Middle School celebrated his victory with confetti raining down, marking his fourth and final attempt at the national stage.
Zaki’s journey to the championship began at age, inspired by family word games and a love of language fostered by his parents, Zaki Anwar and Arshia Quadri, who immigrated from southern India. Both parents played a pivotal role in his success, offering encouragement and support, especially during moments of burnout and self-doubt. Zaki credits them for helping him persevere, saying their motivation was crucial when he felt unmotivated or overwhelmed by the pressure of competition.
A self-described “linguistics nerd,” Zaki is known for his passion for obscure and archaic words, and he balanced his rigorous spelling practice—sometimes up to eight hours a day—with hobbies like solving Rubik’s Cubes and learning French His twin sister, Zara, also played a supportive role, confidently predicting his win this year.
After a heartbreaking runner-up finish in 2024, Zaki’s determination and family support propelled him to the top. He takes home the Scripps Cup, a $50,000 cash prize, and a commemorative medal, securing his place among the nation’s elite young spellers.
