Billy Napier: A New Era at James Madison

In a stunning turn of events, Billy Napier is set to take the reins as the new head football coach at James Madison University (JMU) after a brief but impactful stint at the University of Florida. This move comes after Bob Chesney, the previous coach at JMU, accepted a position at UCLA, leaving the Dukes in need of a new leader.

Napier, who has been coaching for over a decade, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record to his new role. Before joining Florida, Napier served as the head coach at Louisiana-Lafayette, where he achieved notable success, including a 9-4 record in 2021 and an appearance in the Cure Bowl. His tenure at Florida, however, was marked by challenges, with a 10-14 record over two seasons, leading to his dismissal in November 2023.

James Madison’s decision to hire Napier is seen as a strategic move to maintain the program's momentum. Under Chesney, JMU enjoyed a remarkable 2025 season, culminating in a 12-2 record, a Sun Belt Championship, and a potential spot in the College Football Playoff (CFP). Chesney’s success at JMU, including a perfect 8-0 conference record, has set a high bar for his successor.

Napier's appointment at JMU marks his return to the Sun Belt Conference, where he previously had a successful stint at Louisiana. The Dukes are hopeful that Napier’s leadership will continue the program’s upward trajectory and potentially lead them back to the CFP. The five-year contract signed by Napier underscores the university's commitment to long-term success and stability under his tenure.

With Chesney’s departure and Napier’s imminent arrival, the football landscape at JMU is poised for an exciting new chapter. Fans and analysts are eagerly anticipating how Napier will adapt his coaching style to fit the Dukes' dynamic and what new strategies he might bring to the table. As the 2026 season approaches, all eyes will be on Napier to see if he can replicate—or even surpass—the success Chesney brought to the program.
