Atlético Mineiro vs Cienciano: Late Drama, Missed Chances, and a Group Twist

Atlético Mineiro and Cienciano played to a tense 1-1 draw at Arena MRV in Belo Horizonte on May 30, 2025, a result that leaves Group H of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana wide open.

The match saw Atlético Mineiro strike first, with Lyanco heading home in the 43rd minute after a set piece orchestrated by Hulk. But just before halftime, Cienciano’s Christian Cueva leveled the score from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time (45’+7), capitalizing on a defensive lapse by the hosts.

Both sides pushed for a winner in the second half, with Hulk and Bernard threatening for Mineiro, while Cueva and Noronha looked dangerous for Cienciano. Despite late substitutions and a flurry of corners in added time, neither team could break the deadlock.

With this result, Cienciano remains unbeaten atop the group (2 wins, draws), while Atlético Mineiro sits just behind, one point adrift. The draw means qualification scenarios will go down to the wire, with both clubs still in contention for the knockout stage.

Fans are left wondering: Will Cienciano’s resilience hold, or can Atlético Mineiro turn the tables in the final round?
