Lester Holt Steps Down: The Age and Career Move Everyone’s Talking About

Lester Holt, a familiar face to millions of Americans, has officially stepped away from the anchor desk at NBC Nightly News after a decade in the role. Holt, who turned 66 this year, announced his decision in February and made his final broadcast as anchor on May 30, 2025.

Known for his steady presence and trusted reporting, Holt made history as the first Black male solo anchor of a major network evening newscast. His journalism career spans more than four decades, including years at CBS before joining NBC in 2000 Holt will now focus full-time on hosting NBC’s news magazine show Dateline.

Meanwhile, Tom Llamas, another prominent NBC journalist, is rumored to be in consideration for expanded duties within the network’s news division. With Holt’s departure, all eyes are on who will fill the coveted anchor chair and how NBC’s news lineup will evolve in the coming months.
