América Falls Short: The Dramatic Ending You Didn’t See Coming

Club América’s hopes of reaching the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup ended in heartbreak after a 2-1 extra-time defeat to LAFC on May 31 at BMO Stadium. América took the lead in the 64th minute with a penalty converted by Brian Rodríguez, following a foul on Érick Sánchez. For much of the match, América controlled possession and looked set to secure victory.

However, LAFC responded late, with Igor Jesus heading in the equalizer in the 89th minute, forcing extra time. In the 115th minute, Denis Bouanga delivered the decisive blow, scoring his 80th goal for LAFC with a deflected shot that left América’s goalkeeper Luis Malagón with no chance.

Despite a strong showing and a large contingent of América fans in Los Angeles, the Mexican side was unable to recover. With this result, LAFC secures the final spot in the Club World Cup, while América’s journey ends just short of international competition glory.
