Four Service Members Killed and Dozens Injured in Major Fire at CFB Wainwright
Incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright
On Saturday at approximately 4 p.m. local time, a fire erupted near Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta after a gas line or gas well was struck during a live‑fire training exercise, according to unnamed military sources reported by Global News.
Prime Minister Mark Carney described the event as a “serious incident” that caused a major fire and said he was working closely with the Government of Alberta, Premier Danielle Smith and local authorities.
Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed that the incident resulted in “fatalities and injuries.”
Four service members have been identified as killed: Sergeant Morgan Wong, Private Shaun Farrell, Private Aidan Goulding and Private Hayden Lykkemark.
Global News reported that at least seven people were killed and dozens were injured, citing unnamed military sources.
The Municipal District of Wainwright said the blaze crossed the base fence, spread rapidly in high winds and was being actively managed, with fire crews containing the fire later in the night.
Dr Warren Thirsk, an emergency‑department physician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, said patients were being brought to hospitals across Edmonton and that healthcare facilities were “completely overwhelmed” by the number of people needing care.
Flags were ordered to be flown at half‑mast as the nation mourned the loss of the service members.
