Obama’s Cheesecake Factory Quip Sparks Trump Response and GOP Reaction
On Saturday in Ohio, former President Barack Obama joked about his longtime fondness for The Cheesecake Factory while criticizing President Donald Trump’s gold‑heavy Oval Office décor, likening it to “Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.”
Obama said the restaurant had been “my jam for about a decade” and asked, “Do you think I could have survived their childhood without going to the Cheesecake Factory?” referencing his two daughters.
He added that the décor could even be a fit for HGTV.
The comment ignited a reaction from Trump, who defended the White House renovations and praised The Cheesecake Factory as “a very successful company,” while calling Obama “a lousy president.”
At a later rally in Georgia, Obama addressed the backlash, stating Republicans “mobilized a whole‑of‑government response to that joke, not to inflation,” and described the focus on the quip as evidence that “these are not serious people.”
He further asserted that the GOP preferred media discussion of the Cheesecake Factory over “real solutions.”
