Starting May 7, 202, the Department of Homeland Security will require all U.S. travelers aged 18 and older to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card-or another acceptable form of ID such as a passport-to board domestic flights and access federal facilities
A REAL ID features a star in the upper right corner and can only be obtained by visiting your state’s DMV or motor vehicle agency in person. Applicants must provide documents proving identity, Social Security number, and residency. Requirements are similar nationwide, but details and appointment systems vary by state. For example, Texas, Georgia, California, Illinois, and New Jersey all require in-person visits, and demand for appointments has surged as the deadline approaches
If you arrive at an airport without a REAL ID after May 7, you may still fly but should expect delays and extra screening. The TSA will not turn travelers away immediately, but encourages everyone to upgrade as soon as possible to avoid complications
Residents can still apply for a REAL ID after the deadline, but officials recommend acting now to avoid long waits. Check your state’s DMV website for appointment availability and required documents.
