Frances Tiafoe booked his first-ever Roland-Garros quarterfinal after a hard-fought straight-sets victory over Daniel Altmaier on June, 2025. The American, seeded 15th, controlled the early stages with aggressive play and sharp volleys, taking the first two sets 6-3, 6-4 against the German clay-court specialist.
Altmaier, ranked 66th and fresh off a major upset over Taylor Fritz, rallied in the third set, surging to a 5-2 lead as Tiafoe’s consistency wavered. But Tiafoe responded under pressure, clawing back to force a tiebreak and sealing the match 7-6(4) after hours and minutes.
This win makes Tiafoe the second American man to reach the Roland-Garros quarterfinals this year, joining Tommy Paul—a feat last achieved by Americans in 1995 Tiafoe’s next challenge: a high-stakes clash with either Lorenzo Musetti or Holger Rune for a place in the semifinals.
